National Slavery Museum

The Netherlands will have its own National Slavery Museum. The transatlantic slavery past will form the basis for the museum, with room for, among other things, Indian Ocean slavery. The museum will target a broad audience, focusing on education, art, knowledge, and research. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science supports this initiative. The minister has allocated 1 million euros per year starting January 1, 2021, for the development of a National Slavery Museum in Amsterdam.

The museum has a national and inclusive character. It is intended for all Dutch people, which means that a wide range of target groups will be considered. The exploration of the national museum provision is an initiative of the municipality of Amsterdam.

During the meetings, the project leaders aim to investigate what people expect from the museum and how they envision it. The goal is for the museum to be as inclusive as possible.

I had the privilege to capture the atmosphere of one of these meetings in the town hall in Maastricht!
